One hundred nineteen 8th grade students at Bret Harte Middle School participated in I CAN Learn® in the 2002-2003 school year. They completed the CST (California criterion-referenced test) in Spring of 2002 and Spring of 2003. Fifty-two students (%) stayed at the same level (see yellow diagonal). Twenty-three students declined in level, only one by more than one level (see green highlights). Forty-four students increased by one (n = 50) or more (n = 4) levels (see blue highlights). A Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test of significance shows that proficiency levels improved significantly more often (z = -2.4, p< .01) after introduction of I CAN Learn®. Figure 1 indicates the number of students by level in 2002 cross-tabulated to the number in 2003.
